Big Blue Swim School was formed in 2009 by competitive swimmers Chris DeJong and John Lonergan to provide students with a measurable curriculum for learning an important life skill in a comfortable and fun environment. Their mission was to demonstrate to kids that they can do anything by allowing them to reach their full potential in the water. 

Their major events on their timeline are as follows: 

2008Chris and John come together to make arrangements to teach swimming.  

John’s first lesson was to the daughter of current Big Blue board member Tim Flannery. 

2009Big Blue Swim School officially launched from the swimming pool at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. 

2012The Wilmette, Illinois location opened in April.  

Within a year, parents fund a stand-alone facility that teaches 1,500 lessons per week. 

2015The Buffalo Grove, Illinois location opened in January. 

2017Level 5 Investment in February. The Hoffman Estates, Illinois location opens in October. 

2019The Chicago Flagship/Franchisee Training location will open in March. 

2020Big Blue Swim School has a new location in Johns Creek, Georgia. 

2021As of January 2021, Big Blue Swim School had granted 122 franchises.
